Marae Update

The heavy rains in the Turanga (Gisborne) area during October 2010 caused many new slips taking topsoil down to the Waipaoa River to be carried out to sea. The Te Arai River at Manutuke rose over 2.2 metres and a big chunk of the river bank slipped away, forcing the closure of Ohako Marae. Ohako has been a Marae site for the Ngai Tawhiri and Ngati Keti Hapu of Ruapani Iwi since the 1700s, but it is looking highly likely that the buildings will have to be moved.
